How Do I Convert an Image to JPEG?

Is JPEG the Same as JPG?

Yes. JPEG and JPG are the same picture format, and only the spelling of the file ending is different. Old versions of Windows allowed just three letters after the dot, so .jpg became common, while many phones and cameras still write .jpeg. Both open in every app and browser.

Some upload forms and apps check the ending and ask for .jpeg by name, and this page always saves your file with .jpeg. If a form wants .jpg instead, the image to JPG converter works the same way and writes the shorter ending.

What Happens to Your Picture When It Becomes a JPEG?

JPEG keeps photos small by dropping fine detail your eyes barely notice. This tool saves at 92 percent quality, a high setting where the change is hard to see. Here is what happened when we ran real files through this page:

• PNG photo: 7.3 MB became a 1.4 MB JPEG, still 2400 x 1800 pixels.
• BMP photo: 12.7 MB became 1.4 MB, because BMP stores every pixel with no packing at all.
• WebP photo: 776 KB became 1.2 MB. WebP packs photos tighter than JPEG, so the file can grow.
• PNG screenshot: 76 KB became 88 KB. Flat colors and sharp text often stay smaller as PNG.
• JPG photo: it came back byte for byte the same, only renamed to .jpeg. Nothing was saved again, so no quality was lost.

Two more things change. Any see-through part of a PNG or WebP turns white, since a JPEG cannot be see-through. An animated GIF keeps only its first frame.

Can You Make the JPEG Smaller at the Same Time?

Yes. Tick "Also compress the Image to a size", type the most KB your form allows, and convert as usual. The tool looks for the highest quality that fits your number. It aims about 2 KB under it, so a "less than 100 KB" rule on a form still passes. Only when the number is very small does it also shrink the picture's width and height.

In our test, a 7.3 MB PNG photo with a 100 KB target came out at 97 KB and kept all 2400 x 1800 pixels. When you only want a smaller file and not a new format, reduce the image size in KB instead.

Which Pictures Can This JPEG Converter Open?
