Convert PNG to Text - Free OCR
Turn a PNG screenshot or image into text you can edit, free, in over 100 languages.
Drag the box to keep only the text you want, or leave it as it is to read the whole image.
This tool reads the text in a PNG screenshot or image and turns it into text you can copy. Most PNGs with text in them are screenshots, since PNG is the default screenshot format on Windows, Mac, and phones. Upload one, paste it with Ctrl+V, or snap a photo, and you get text back in seconds.

How to Turn a PNG Into Text
- Add the PNG: Upload it, drag and drop it in, paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V, or tap "Take a photo" if you are on a phone. JPG, WebP, and HEIC work too, if that is what you actually have.
- Crop and pick a language: Drag the crop box around just the text you need, rotate a sideways image, and choose up to 3 languages if the text is not in English.
- Tap Extract Text: The reading engine loads once, then stays cached, and reads the image.
- Copy, fix, or download: Check any highlighted word, edit anything by hand, then copy the text or save it as a .txt or .docx file.
Reading PNG Screenshots Accurately
A flat, evenly lit screenshot is the easiest image for this tool to read. The engine reads it twice, once as uploaded and once after a clean-up pass, and keeps whichever result it trusts more. Any number it is not fully sure about gets a second, closer look.
A photographed page still works, though it will not come out quite as accurate as a flat screenshot. The same clean-up pass straightens and sharpens it before the tool reads it.
More Than 100 Languages, Including Hindi
Pick up to 3 languages before you tap Extract Text, from a searchable list of more than 100. It covers Hindi and plenty of non-Latin scripts, not just European languages. Add more than one when a screenshot mixes languages, like an app with English menus and Hindi text.
Nothing Is Uploaded
Your PNG never leaves your device. The tool reads it and writes the text right in your browser, so no server ever sees your image or your words. The only network traffic is a one-time download of the reading engine (about 4MB) and the data for your chosen languages, cached after first use.
FAQ
Is it free, and does the text have a watermark?
Yes, it is free, with no signup and no watermark on the text or the download.
Does it read handwriting?
It is built and tuned for printed or typed text, like a screenshot or a scanned page. Handwriting comes out far less reliable, so check a handwritten result by hand before you trust it.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Upload, crop, and the language picker all work on a phone browser, and you can tap "Take a photo" to use your camera directly.
Can I paste a screenshot straight in?
Yes. Copy any screenshot, then press Ctrl+V on the page, and it goes straight to the crop step with no need to save the image first.
If you have a phone photo instead of a screenshot, the JPG to text tool is built for that. For any other picture format, like WebP or BMP, the image to text tool reads all of them. Going the other way, from typed words to a page that looks handwritten, use the text to handwriting tool.
